Some important terms
used in reference to fabric
Grain:- The
thread of the material
Warp
:-lengthwise grain or thread of the material
Weft :-
Crosswise or length of the material
Selvedge or
selvage :- The more commonly used strip that finishes each lengthwise edge of
woven fabrics
Bias:- When
the cloth is neither lengthwise or crosswise then it is known as bias
True Bias:-
Means the diagonal line resulting when lengthwise grain falls on crosswise
grain
The above figure shows the weave of the cloth. The side 1-3 and 2-4 are
selvedge sides and the cloth parallel to these sides is known as lengthwise or
warp. The crosswise cloth is shown by 1-2 or 3-4 . The cloth in the direction
of 1-4 or 2-3 is in bias
