Treatment of materials before cutting
Each material has its own properties. Some materials shrink others stretch etc. So it is very important for the materials to by given primary treatments before  cutting out the garment, or after the garment is ready it may change its shape. Treatments are mostly required to materials like woolens, cottons, linens, silks, and rayon.
   Materials like cotton, linen and wool shrink after washing so it is advisable to get at least 4 inches more material than required. It is very important to sponge wools and shrink cotton before cutting the garments.
Sponging woolens:-  First clip selvedges; then open material and lay it flat on the table. Take a wet cloth, wring it, and spread it on the woolen material. Roll the material and sheet together and let them  lay for several hours or over night.  Then unroll the material and press it on the wrong side using a press cloth. Keep pressing slowly , working back and forth, until the material is totally dry.
Shrinking cotton and Linens:- Soak  the cotton or linen material completely in cold water  for several hours. Squeeze water from material do not wring it. Hang on a clothes until almost dry, then press.        
Pressing silks and rayon :-It is very important to remove all the creases from the silk and rayon material before cutting them.  Heat  the iron not too hot, place material over a folded Turkish towel or a soft pad. Press lightly on wrong side  of the material

Commercial shrinkage of cottons and linens :- To meet the problem of shrinkage is most cottons and linens, a scientific method of controlled shrinkage has been perfected by which the cloth is shrunk completely and permanently  by the manufacturer before it is sold as piece goods.
